The National Electrical Code - Installing Electric Systems Safetyly

service nsw contractor licence renewal

The National Electrical Code, which is the United States' most widely-adopted standard for safe installation electric systems, is known as the NEC. The NFPA releases a new edition every three years of the NEC. It's updated to reflect the latest technologies, and to help protect people from fires caused by electrical shocks or burns.

NEC sets the standard in safe electric systems for residential, commercial, and industrial use. It covers everything from outlet locations, receptacles, outlets and wiring to grounding and GFCI protection.

It requires that receptacles be within reach of a six-foot cord, which reduces the risk of tripping. Tamper-resistant receptacles can be provided to prevent children inserting items into the wire.

There is no limit to how many receptacles you can have in your home or business. But, the circuit must have a maximum of 100 amperes. Each structure needs its own service drop.

At least 4 feet in height and maximum 6 feet, breaker boxes should be placed. They cannot be located in bathrooms and must be accessible without lifting or moving obstructions. The breaker box doors should open 90 degrees and must be free of obstructions.

If a receptacle is located in the same space as a switch, it must be connected to the switch with a neutral wire. This is important for electronic devices and switches that use constant electricity.

This applies especially to lights and other appliances as well as plug-in heaters and air conditioners. This applies to outdoor receptacles located in the same place as indoor receptacles.

Grounding all electrical circuits is essential, even those that serve hot tubs or pools, is also important. Plumbing, phone lines, coaxial cable and gas piping systems must also be grounded to avoid dangerous sparks or arcing.

Ground fault circuit interrupter (or GFCI) is an automatic system that cuts off power if there is a short in the lines. It is required in each room of a building. If activated by an alert, it can save lives.

There are also tamper-resistant receptacles, which can be used for outdoor applications as well as in indoor areas. These receptacles are designed to stop children from pulling a cord, or sticking a paperclip in the outlet.

The NEC will require a grounding wire to run to all switches. This is an important feature for electronic devices that require a small amount of constant electricity, but also for other types of switches that can be pulled by a child.

Tamper-resistant outlets and sockets are required for all rooms, inside and outside. These plugs can be used to prevent children from tampering with the plug and prevent them from tripping or causing fires.

Before doing any type of electrical work, it is worth checking with your local municipal building department. They usually follow the NEC but may have variations that apply to your specific town or municipality.
