Red House Painters has grown to be a cult group and one of 4AD's most beloved artists in the years that have passed since their debut. Their time with the label has seen them record a variety of records, which helped define the label. 4AD will release their first four albums, Down Colorful Hill, Red House Painters, Ocean Beach, and Bridge in a box set on April 21st.
Drop: a reverb-drenched six-song debut
It was only a year after Red House Painters first formed that they released their debut album, a six song LP entitled 'Drop' which was drenched with reverb and reminiscent of an early C100 Memorex cassette. The songs were a bit slow, but they had a nice feel to them. Mark Kozelek’s vocals were clear.

The band's reverb soaked guitars reminded me of Neil Young. It was also known for their strong penchant to cover classic rock songs. Kozelek, however, had his own material, which wasn’t always the easiest to access. He reworked John Denver's 'Take Me Home' into an acoustic version, and also covered 'I Am A Rock' by Simon and Garfunkel on the 1993 album Rollercoaster.
'Moments': a more pastoral approach
The following album, "Ocean Beach", featured a more folk-influenced approach. There are no long, droning songs like their early albums. And there are many more melodies. Lyrical narratives are also included. It was the last album to feature Gorden Mack as guitarist. Kozelek began moving toward a more radio-friendly sound with this album. Songs like 'Summer Dress" and San Geronimo featured more upbeat lyrics. The album's covers for 'Long Distance Runaround’ by Yes and ‘Drop’ by Fleetwood Mac are more relaxed than their earlier work.
'Long Distance Runaround’: Acoustic cover of a hit 1971 song
While the Red House Painters have covered many popular rock tracks over time, 'Long Distance Runaround’ was their first cover acoustic. Although it isn't their best cover, it's a solid track that Kozelek breaks out of his shell to deliver more well-crafted songs and melodies.

"Ocean Beach": A more reflective approach
Kozelek took a more folk-influenced approach when they recorded Ocean Beach. There are fewer long, dreamlike epics than on their first albums and more songs that are more contemplative than ever.
